Weddings, Weddings, and more Weddings

Recently (yesterday in fact) one of my good friends from high school got married. They’re an incredibly down-to-earth and fun-loving couple and I’m sure they’re going to have a beautiful life together, but I couldn’t help thinking throughout the ceremony (and most of the reception) that they were also incredibly young to be starting a life together. My best friend also just got engaged to her high school sweetheart. Again, super happy for them, but seriously, what’s up with this wedding frenzy that’s been going on lately? Now, anytime I turn the TV on, there’s a show on weddings. If I’m browsing the magazines in my local pharmacy, there’s an entire rack dedicated to weddings. If I’m listening to the radio, there’s a song about weddings (thanks Bruno Mars and Train). Weddings, weddings, and more weddings!

I’ve never had the desire to want to get married, and I definitely don’t see that happening anytime in the near future, but I honestly think the cosmos are trying to tell me something. Instead of figuring out what the “divine” message could be, I thought it’d be fun to make fun of weddings…

"Gypsy Weddings"

This is a show on TLC (all the wedding shows are on TLC). It takes a look at the Gypsy culture of Great Britain and Ireland. Apparently, traveling Gypsies LOVE everything big and extravagant. One girls dress weighed over 80 pounds and had lights in it (they had to bring a fire extinguisher to the wedding just in case). The girls get married young at age 16 and become stay at trailer moms since gypsies don't believe in living in actual houses. The show is hilarious but it's kind of sad that the only thing these girls have to look forward to is their wedding day.

Who Let The Bridezilla Loose?

Bridezillas is a funny show on WE TV that follows a bride during the week leading up to her wedding. I'm pretty sure a lot of the women are acting (at least I hope they are) but if even 1/4 of the freakouts that happen on the show are real, it's enough to scare any man away from marriage for the rest of his life.

  1. Guess it's just "wedding season!" You're right though, I feel the same way and have been noticing it too. Last night I was walking on the beach (just trying to relax) and what do you know, I see ANOTHER wedding. It seems like they're everywhere this summer!

  2. Jessica,
I love following your blogs! My sister is getting married in September and my older brother is getting married next summer! I can't imagine getting married right now. I thought your blog was great. I love watching Bridezillas. It's hilarious. Have you ever seen, 'Say Yes to the Dress'? I have never seen Gypsy Weddings but I will definitely check it out.

  3. Haha, it's funny that you posted about this. I was just telling my friend today how everyone I know is getting married. I also just caught up with one of my friends who is interning for a wedding planner. Being the hopeless romantic I am I fell in love with the idea of weddings along time ago and I have been planning mine for some while now. Lord help the guy that wants to spend his life with me I think it's well known I will be a bridezilla.

  4. I was actually about to write on the same topic this week! My friend got married this past Sunday and I even said at the reception that I was happy for her but glad it wasn't me. Haha, I'm sure she's going to be happy and her husband seems to be a great guy but I feel like I'm too young to be tied down right now. I'm a huge fan of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Those dresses are incredible and I really love to learn about their culture. It does seem weird and a little sad that the girls are so young but I feel like it only seems that way to me because I have never been a part of it and don't fully understand their ideology. My favorite part of the show is actually when they show the dating "rituals" of how boys have to talk to girls first. I also think it is incredible that the girls wear such skimpy clothes and yet it is totally forbidden to have sex before marriage and their morals seem to be so strict and high. I try to watch Bridezilla sometimes but it just makes me angry that people would put up with such disrespect from someone they are going to spend their life with. Wedding season should be over soon enough though and hopefully it won't turn into divorce season!

  5. Jessica! I loved this blog entry. I know exactly what you mean! Wedding are so popular right now, especially with people my age/younger...it's like I think back to all my closest friends in high school/growing up and basically most of them are either married/have kids right now. And i'm only 22! My sister is getting married July 23rd, and I have 2 other weddings before then within the next month! It's insane! It must be something in the water;).

  6. I've seen commercials for Gypsy Weddings and it looks crazy and outrageous. As for the marriage craze, America wonders why it's divorce rate is so high. My good friend (who I lost as a result of this marriage)got married this past summer to guy she had known for 6 months. KNOWN! They met in March and were married by July. He was not only on disability (he had no intention of ever getting a job even though he could work) and was also and alcoholic and a crack head. I didn't know why she was marrying this guy but I guess you cant stop people from doing what they want. Surprise, Surprise though they are getting a divorce. I think people are more in love with the idea of being in love. We just need to sit back and chill out. We have our whole lives to be married, why the rush?
